Where to Fish Near Dunsmuir, CA

Dunsmuir is a small town in Northern California located just 53 miles north of Redding. The city’s slogan is “Home of the Best Water on Earth” and it is definitely worthy of this claim. Fishing spots near Dunsmuir are plentiful and easy to find. Anglers of all ages and abilities will enjoy fishing in the area, whether trolling by boat or fly-fishing in waders.

The Upper Sacramento River runs through Dunsmuir, offering numerous access points right in town. The jagged Castle Crags tower in the south and iconic Mount Shasta looms in the north, creating a stunning backdrop for any angling adventure. Excellent fishing, particularly for rainbow trout, can be found anywhere along the Sacramento River. Notable access points are located at Sweetbriar, Soda Creek, Castella, Cantara Loop, as well as within Castle Crags State Park. Mount Shasta towers 14,179 feet above its namesake town, just nine miles to the north of Dunsmuir. The best fishing in the area might just be on the McCloud River. Multiple access points provide a variety of fishing options. The Lakin Dam creates a small reservoir and excellent fishing area. Excellent fishing may also be found at Lower Falls, one of a trio located on the river. The McCloud River Preserve offers fishing to a limited number of anglers by reservation or on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Lake Shastina, 27 miles north of Dunsmuir, is home to Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Largemouth Bass, catfish, and crappie. Fishing is best by boat on this large lake surrounded by private land.

About 40 miles to the south, near Redding, Shasta Lake is another fishing hot spot. As the largest reservoir in California, this lake offers ample fishing from shore or by boat, as well as many other recreational choices.
