The Best Fishing Tours and Lessons in Hawley, PA

imageFishermen of all levels will find much to enjoy in Pennsylvania, named one of the best states to fly fish by Forbes. This is especially true of Hawley, Pennsylvania, home of Lake Wallenpaupack, a man-made, five-acre lake created in 1927 by the Pennsylvania Power & Light Company, and the Lackawaxen River. Less than three hours’ drive from both New York City and Philadelphia, the lake and river are stocked with plenty of walleye, striped and smallmouth bass and other fish.

Here are some of the best fishing excursions in and around Hawley for anglers that include a high-end destination along with fishing tours run by local professionals. Note: You will need a valid Pennsylvania fishing license before you begin.

If you want a pampered fishing experience, try The Lodge at Woodloch. It offers classes in fly fishing and fly tying plus half-day and full-day fishing trips along the Lackawaxen River. It also has its own 15-acre private lake stocked with panfish and bass.

Bill’s Guide Service is named after founder Bill Albright, a retired B.A.S.S. 100 top touring professional who ran guided tours and lessons on Lake Wallenpaupack for over 30 years. Though he passed away in 2015, the service continues his legacy and provides half-day, full-day, weekday and weekend rates as well as packages for night fishing. Bill’s Guide Service is licensed by the state of Pennsylvania and has a safe boating (USCG) certificate and current CPR/Safety training certificate.

Lackawaxen River Fishing Tours is run under the direction of John Appert, who brings more than 50 years of fly fishing experience to his endeavor. He instructs his students in the art of fishing with wet flies, dry flies, streamers and nymphs for bass, trout and steelheads. He also teaches pupils how to fish in both streams and lakes and advises them on how to watch the water to sense the presence of fish.

Ray’s Fishing Guide Services is home to sportsman Ray Cichocki, a member of the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame. He runs charter trips for both experienced and new fishermen. Ray’s Fishing Guide Services provides clients with rods, reels and baits. His charter trips run from April through November, dependent on weather.

If lessons and tours aren’t for you, and you’d rather go it alone, we’d suggest checking out Lake Wallenpaupack at Silver Birches. The Silver Birches Resort in the Poconos is quite wonderful, as it sits right on the lake and the hotel offers boat slips so you can go fishing all on your own.

Whatever your level of expertise, you are sure to find a Hawley fishing tour thats suits you. You’ll be sure to come home with some trophies from one of the nation’s premier fishing spots.
