1. Mary Lou Retton

Competing at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Mary Lou Retton is the first female gymnast outside of Eastern Europe to win the competition’s all-around title. She won the gold medal after achieving a perfect score of 10 in the vault, the competition’s final event. She also competed in individual and team competitions and won two silver and two bronze medals.

With her wide and welcoming smile, she soared to stardom and became America’s sweetheart. She appeared in many commercial endorsements, making her a household name.
