boat-913576_960_720Located in South Carolina’s Charleston County, Johns Island is the state’s largest island and the 4th largest on the East Coast of the U.S. Named for historic Saint John parish in Barbados, the island encompasses 84 square miles and its population is approximately 14,000. Johns Island history includes significant roles in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars due to its proximity to the Confederate stronghold city of Charleston, which over time has annexed roughly 1/3 of the island into its city limits. Native wildlife and fauna are in abundance, especially among the surrounding marshlands and rivers, most notably in shellfish and dolphins. A popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts, Johns Island also offers plenty of other fun-filled outdoor activities for visitors.
